Training becomes a priority for Italian manufacturing digitalization growth.

Artificial intelligence wins over entrepreneurs: for 67 percent, the impact on the industry will be positive

At MECSPE Bari, the benchmark event for the manufacturing industry in central and southern Italy, there are many events dedicated to innovation and training.

Bari, Nov. 24, 2023 – In recent years, technological innovation has accelerated the digital transition process of our enterprises. According to the observatory conducted on the occasion of MECSPE Bari, Italy’s leading trade show dedicated to the manufacturing industry organized by Senaf and held until Saturday, Nov. 25, at the New Levante Fairgrounds, as many as seven out of 10 entrepreneurs say they had medium to high digital growth in the 2nd quarter of 2023. Among the innovative technologies or processes they plan to introduce, entrepreneurs place cybersecurity and collaborative robotics at the top, but Artificial Intelligence, a technology that is finding increasing acceptance in the industry, is beginning to appear: as many as 67 percent of respondents say the impact of applied AI on industry will be positive or very positive, a figure up 8 percentage points from the previous four-month period.

As evidence of this, nearly two out of 10 companies say they are already using AI, while as many as 51 percent have already moved—or plan to do so soon—to gather information about it and implement solutions based on this new technology within their processes. As for the areas where companies have already introduced, or plan to introduce, AI, they are mainly predictive maintenance (32 percent), production planning (27 percent), and process supervision (26 percent).

“Today’s entrepreneurs are increasingly aware of the importance of digitalization in building the industry of the future,” said Ivo Nardella, president of Senaf, Tecniche Nuove Publishing Group. “Therefore, they are extremely interested in processes and innovations that can bring added value and make them increasingly competitive. Indeed, the high interest in Artificial Intelligence testifies to the desire to make use of new technologies that can increase their efficiency and prepare them for future challenges.”

That is why the topic of AI will be addressed tomorrow within MECSPE’s Innovation Square, where some aspects and implications of AI will be explored in depth and where experts and some companies will talk about their experience. These will include Deagle Srl and Apulia Software, two companies that have developed AI programs applied to manufacturing thanks to the contribution of Meditech 4.0 Competence Center.

“The competitiveness of southern small and medium-sized enterprises passes through the implementation of new technologies,” said Angelo Giuliana, Meditech Competence Center general manager. “Artificial intelligence, in its many forms, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting frontiers. The same is true for data exploitation and applications of the potential of quantum networks in the communications sector. These are all areas in which we have chosen to invest as a Competence Center, precisely to stay abreast of the times and in line with market demands. Deagle and Apulia Software tell two success stories related to the applications of AI to fields far apart: aeronautics and taxation. A demonstration, in my view, of how similar are the challenges companies face and how valuable and cross-cutting the answers offered by technology.”

New technologies have certainly made companies more modern, efficient, and productive, with less waste, better resource management, and responsive to the needs of young people and the environment, but at the same time, a high level of training is required. For this reason, MECSPE devotes ample space to the training aspect, starting with the participation of Bari Polytechnic University, which is present at the fair with a Demonstration Area and a Speech Area, and involving professional institutes such as the ITS A. Cuccovillo Foundation, which, together with some partner companies, in the context of the Training Square 4.0, will highlight the importance of creating links and synergies between companies and training to promote talents capable of responding adequately to the needs of the industrial world. In this very sense, also the MECSPE YOUNG & CAREER section is available at the fair, where students who have almost finished their studies can get in direct contact with the companies present in search of trained resources.
